Deputy honored for saving a life
It took a lot of courage for Barton County Sheriff's Office deputy Kyle Reed to pull an accident victim from a flaming vehicle wreck last summer. That heroic action earned him the Barton County Employee Recognition Award from the County Commission Monday morning.
Case closed on Pawnee Rock fire
PAWNEE ROCK - The cause of a fire that destroyed a trailer house at 408 Cunife St. last Friday night has been ruled "undetermined," Pawnee Rock Volunteer Fire Chief Dustin Chambers said Monday.

Rabies cases on upswing
Rabies cases are on the upswing this year, most likely due to the mild winter, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. A total of 21 cases have been identified in the state since Jan. 1.

The Rolling Sculpture Car Show will roll into the Barton County Historical Society and Village on Saturday, June 2, as one of the K-96 June Jaunt events. Area bank customers receive fraudulent calls
Area banks have been inundated with phone calls from customers saying they have received calls or texts on their cell phones from an unknown number stating that they wouldn't be able to use their debit cards until further notice. There was also a link that said they could enter their account info and it would give them more information.
Barton recognizes 2011-12 Student Ambassadors of the Year
Barton Community College has announced its 2011-12 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassadors of the Year. Named in memory of Brant J. Ballhorst, the award recognizes two outstanding student ambassadors, Karisa Kaiser and Reba Hickel, both of Hoisington.
